Living with a chronic condition is not only about managing a diagnosis. It is about understanding how your body is functioning, how it is responding to stress and illness, and how well it is adapting to the demands placed upon it.

Lisette Portes, MD is an experienced, board-certified family medicine physician practicing in Miami, Florida. Certified by the American Board of Family Medicine, Dr. Portes cares for adults 18 and older, including seniors on Medicare, from her Coral Way office. Patients come to Dr. Portes for continuity: she knows their history, follows clinical patterns over time, manages conditions that do not resolve in a single visit, and coordinates specialist care when needed. Her approach is centered on understanding the whole person behind the diagnosis and building an individualized plan that can evolve as the patient's health changes.

Understand your health through your physiology.
Living with a chronic condition is not only about managing a diagnosis. It is about understanding how your body is functioning, how it is responding to stress and illness, and how well it is adapting to the demands placed upon it.
As a Board-Certified Family Physician, I take a comprehensive approach to chronic disease care that combines traditional medical evaluation with objective measures of physiological regulation. One of the tools I use is Heart Rate Variability (HRV) to evaluate patterns of autonomic nervous system regulation and the body's adaptive response.
We begin with a comprehensive medical evaluation and establish a physiological baseline. HRV measurements can help characterize your autonomic regulation and adaptive capacity at the time of evaluation.
We put your physiological data into clinical context. Your HRV patterns are considered together with your symptoms, medical history, medications, laboratory results, sleep, lifestyle, and other relevant factors.
Based on this information, we develop an individualized plan designed around your specific clinical and physiological needs.
Your treatment plan may include appropriate medical management together with targeted lifestyle and behavioral interventions focused on areas such as sleep, recovery, physical activity, stress regulation, and other modifiable factors.
Your progress is followed over time. We evaluate how your symptoms, clinical outcomes, and physiological measurements change and adjust the plan as needed.
Many patients with chronic conditions have symptoms that persist even when individual laboratory values appear acceptable.
Fatigue. Poor sleep. Difficulty recovering. Digestive symptoms. Fluctuations in blood pressure. Reduced energy. Stress intolerance.
These experiences are part of the clinical picture.
My approach is to look at the whole physiological system, rather than focusing exclusively on one isolated symptom or laboratory value.
HRV is not a diagnosis by itself. It is a physiological measurement that can provide additional information about autonomic regulation when interpreted within the context of a comprehensive medical evaluation. This allows us to establish a baseline, identify patterns, implement an individualized plan, and objectively follow changes over time.
The goal is progress you can understand and measure.
HRV is used as an adjunctive physiological measurement and is not a standalone diagnostic test. HRV findings are interpreted in conjunction with the patient's medical history, clinical evaluation, and appropriate diagnostic testing.

Your body changes. Your response to stress changes. Your sleep, activity, environment, medications, and illness can all influence your physiological state. Your care should evolve with you. I work with my patients throughout this process—evaluating, treating, measuring, reassessing, and adjusting as we work toward better health and function.
